Charcoal Black WPC Deck Board

Premium Commercial Grade Composite

Tough Decking Charcoal Black Composite Decking Board offers a double sided finish: Woodsman+ for an embossed woodgrain design, and Active+ for a conventional groove pattern.

Charcoal is the deepest, richest tone in our range. It sits somewhere between Anthracite and pure black, and what makes it work is the slight warmth in the colour, which stops it looking flat or industrial. We supply a lot of Charcoal for modern garden builds, contemporary outdoor kitchens and high-end commercial work where the customer wants the deck to anchor the space rather than blend in. It looks particularly good against pale render, light stone, and white-painted walls.

Every job is different, and every customer comes to us at a different stage. Some have already worked out their joist centres and just need the boards. Others are starting from a patch of garden and a rough idea. Either way, we’re here to help with whatever you need, from board choice through to the right finishing edge.

Commercial Grade Decking – Built to Last!

Tough Decking Charcoal Black Composite Decking Boards are made from recycled plastic and wood, far superior in terms of longevity and appearance to traditional timber or lower quality composite decking. They Won’t Rot, Warp, or Splinter.

They are commercial-grade composite deck boards and are uniquely “Uncapped” with full-body colour running through the product. This means minor scratches, whether from pets or garden furniture, can simply be sanded out without losing the original shade.

Natural Weathering & UV Protection: The Charcoal Black Deck Boards have built-in UV Stabilisers. Once their “true colour” is reached, usually within 4 to 6 weeks, they will not continue to lighten. With a deep colour like Charcoal the initial weathering is less obvious than on the lighter boards, but it does still happen, so don’t be alarmed if the first few weeks look slightly lighter than the sample you ordered. The colour settles and holds.

They also have built-in Anti-Mildew & Anti-Slip Properties, making the boards easy to clean and safer underfoot, providing extra grip even when wet.

A note worth mentioning with the darker boards: any composite, ours included, will warm up more in direct summer sun than a lighter colour will. If the deck is going somewhere it gets full sun all day and bare feet are likely, around a pool for instance, Stone Grey or Anthracite are usually the better choice. Order a free sample pack and put it in the spot for an afternoon if you want to test it before committing.

Plus, we back our full-body composite products with a 15-Year Guarantee.

From matching Step Nosing to Professional Fixings, we have every detail covered. Our unique X-Clips are a particular favourite among installers, creating a precision 3-4mm joint for a flawlessly tight finish.

For the main deck area, stainless steel T-clips are the standard hidden fixing, with plastic T-clips available as a budget option for domestic jobs. Starter clips take care of the first board against a wall or edge.

Technical Information

About The Board

This is our Charcoal Black commercial-grade composite deck board, suitable for both domestic gardens and heavier commercial use. It’s a reversible board, so you get two looks from one product. The Woodsman+ side has a deep embossed wood grain. The Active+ side on the reverse has a more conventional groove pattern. Charcoal works well either way up. The Woodsman+ side is the most popular for residential builds where customers want the warmth of a wood-effect grain. The Active+ side gets specified more often on commercial jobs and contemporary architectural builds where a cleaner, more uniform line is wanted.

The board is made from 60% recycled wood fibre and 40% plastic polymer. UV stabilisers and anti-mildew additives are mixed through the board itself, not just applied as a surface coating, which is what you’d expect from a quality uncapped product.

Board Sizes & Weights

  • Length: 2200mm
  • Width: 150mm
  • Depth: 25mm
  • Weight: roughly 5.72kg per board
  • Coverage: 0.33m² per board

We’re often asked why we don’t supply 3.6m or 4m lengths like some suppliers. The short answer is that 2.2m is the right length for a stable, properly engineered board. We’ve written about that in more detail here.

How It Performs

Wear and tear: Because the board is uncapped with full-body colour running right through, scratches from garden furniture, dog claws or dragged BBQs can be sanded out without leaving a visible mark. Capped boards don’t give you that option. Once the cap’s damaged on a dark capped board, you’re often left looking at a pale streak where the core shows through. Ours don’t do that.

Weathering: New boards lighten slightly over the first 4 to 6 weeks as they reach their true colour. With Charcoal this is harder to spot than on the lighter boards, but it does happen. After that the UV stabilisers hold the colour and you won’t see further fading.

Heat: Worth being honest about this one. Any darker composite, ours or anyone else’s, will warm up more in summer sun than a light grey will. For most installations this is a non-issue, but for poolside or any deck where bare feet are guaranteed in July and August, customers should think carefully before going with Charcoal. Stone Grey or Anthracite handle direct sun more comfortably.

Underfoot: The textured surface gives genuine grip in the wet, which is the same across all our colours.

Looking after it: No staining, no sealing, no annual treatment. A brush down and a wash with warm soapy water once or twice a year is all it needs. Charcoal hides muddy footprints, pollen and general garden dirt better than the lighter boards, which is one of the reasons it’s popular with families and busy commercial sites.

Fitting

For most domestic decks we recommend allowing 10% wastage. If your deck is a simple square or rectangle with no awkward cuts, you can usually get away with 5%. For anything with curves, mitres or multiple changes of direction, allow 15%.

The boards work with all our clip systems:

  • X-Clips are our preferred fixing for a tight 3 to 4mm joint, and the right choice for vertical risers under step nosing or when cladding.
  • Stainless steel T-clips are the standard hidden fixing for the main deck area.
  • Plastic T-clips are a budget option for domestic jobs.
  • Starter clips are for the first board against a wall or edge.

If you’re new to fitting composite, our Decking Kits come with the right ratio of boards, clips and screws already worked out, which saves the head-scratching.

Where It’s Used

We supply Charcoal Black for everything from contemporary garden makeovers to roof terraces, restaurant outdoor seating, hotel courtyards and pub gardens. It’s the colour of choice when the customer wants the deck to make a strong visual statement, and it works particularly well as a contrast against pale walls, light stone or planted borders. The 15-year guarantee applies whether it’s a domestic deck or a commercial one. We don’t have separate warranty terms for trade jobs.

Warranty

Every board carries our 15-year guarantee. If you have a question about the warranty or want to talk through a project before ordering, give us a ring on 01803 313211 or drop us an email at sales@toughdecking.co.uk. You’ll get someone who actually knows the product.
