How to Spot Cheap, Low-Quality Composite Decking

The quickest way to spot cheap composite decking is to look past the price and check four things: the weight and wall thickness of the board, the length and terms of the guarantee, whether the colour is UV-stabilised so it will not fade, and the quality of the fixings. Cheap boards feel light and thin, fade fast, come with a short guarantee or none at all, and often ship with brittle plastic clips. A good board feels solid, holds its colour, and is backed by a proper guarantee. The honest test is to get samples and leave them outside for a couple of weeks before you commit.

Composite decking is a long-term buy, so a board that looks like a bargain can cost you far more if it fades, sags or fails in a few years. The trouble is that a cheap board and a good one can look almost the same in a photo. Here is how to spot cheap composite decking before you order, and what separates a genuine value board from a false economy.

What makes cheap composite decking cheap?

Composite is a mix of recycled wood and plastic. The cost comes down to what goes into that mix and how the board is made. Cheap boards use lower-grade material, thinner walls, less plastic and weaker colour stabilisers to hit a low price. They can look fine on day one and then fade, swell or go brittle once the British weather gets to work. A quality board costs a little more because the material and the manufacturing are better, and that is what you are paying for across fifteen or twenty years.

Weight and wall thickness

Pick a board up. A quality composite board has a reassuring weight and, if it is hollow, thick and evenly spaced internal walls. Cheap boards feel light and flimsy, with thin walls that flex and can crack under a dropped planter or a table leg. Thin walls also mean the board is more likely to bounce between the joists and sag over time. If a board feels like it weighs next to nothing, that is a red flag.

Colour and fade

This is where cheap composite decking really shows itself, usually within the first year. Good boards use UV stabilisers so they hold their colour and only mellow slightly as they settle in. Cheap boards use less, and they can fade patchily and badly, leaving you with a tired, blotchy deck long before it should look that way. Capped boards, with a protective shell bonded on top, hold their colour the longest. Ask how much fade to expect and over what period, because a confident supplier will give you a straight answer.

The guarantee tells you a lot

A guarantee is a manufacturer backing their own product with their own money, so it is one of the most honest signals you have. Cheap decking often comes with a short guarantee, five years, or none at all. A quality board is typically backed for fifteen years or more. Fixings and the little details

The board is only half the job, and cheap ranges cut corners on the bits you do not see. Brittle plastic clips snap on site and let boards work loose later, where good ranges use stainless steel. Watch for boards that arrive bowed or with slightly different widths, a sign of loose manufacturing tolerances that make a deck a nightmare to lay straight. A strong chemical smell or a greasy surface are other tells of a cheaper mix.

How to check before you buy

You do not have to guess. The single best thing you can do is order samples, and be wary of any supplier who will not send them. Feel the weight, look at both faces, and leave the samples outside for a couple of weeks through rain and sun to see how they behave. Check the guarantee in writing, and ask what the board is actually made of. A good supplier is happy to answer all of it, because they have nothing to hide.
