Composite Decking Colours: How to Choose the Right One
Published · By Tough Decking Composite DeckingOur composite decking colours come in seven shades across two ranges. The Woodsman range covers Anthracite Grey, Stone Light Grey, Charcoal Black and Chocolate Brown, and the capped Elite range adds Champagne Light Oak, Graphite Grey and Walnut Brown. Grey shades suit a modern, contemporary look, while the browns give a warmer, more natural feel. The right choice comes down to your house, how much sun the deck gets and the look you are after, so order a free sample pack and see them in your own garden before you decide.
Colour is the bit everyone enjoys choosing and the bit that holds people up the longest. A deck is a big surface and you will look at it every day, so it is worth getting right. Here is a run through our composite decking colours, what suits what, and a few things to think about before you commit.
Our composite decking colours
We keep two ranges. The Woodsman range is our reversible, two-sided board and the everyday value choice. The capped Elite range holds its colour and finish for longer and sits at the premium end. Here is the full line up:
| Colour | Range | Tone | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anthracite Grey | Woodsman | Dark grey | Modern gardens, render, grey window frames |
| Stone Light Grey | Woodsman | Light grey | Open, contemporary, smaller spaces |
| Charcoal Black | Woodsman | Near black | Bold, high contrast, modern courtyards |
| Chocolate Brown | Woodsman | Warm brown | Traditional gardens, brick and stone |
| Champagne Light Oak | Elite | Light oak | Bright, natural look, capped finish |
| Graphite Grey | Elite | Mid grey | Contemporary, holds colour, capped |
| Walnut Brown | Elite | Rich brown | Warm, premium feel, capped |
Grey or brown?
This is the real decision, and it usually sorts itself out once you look at your house. Grey tones like Anthracite, Stone and Graphite give a clean, modern look and sit well against rendered walls, grey window frames and contemporary planting. They are the most popular choice by a distance at the moment. The browns, Chocolate and Walnut, are warmer and more traditional, and they work beautifully with brick, stone and a greener, more established garden. Champagne Light Oak sits between the two, a light natural tone that brightens a space without going grey.
Think about sun and heat
Like any decking, darker boards get warmer in direct sun, so if your deck faces full south and you like bare feet, a lighter shade such as Stone or Champagne Light Oak will stay more comfortable through the afternoon. A darker board like Charcoal or Anthracite looks fantastic and hides the odd mark well, but it will feel warmer underfoot on a hot day. Neither is a problem, it is just worth knowing before you pick.
Match it to the house and the garden
Hold your samples up against the house wall, the back door and any existing paving or fencing, not just against each other. A colour that looks great in isolation can clash with warm red brick or disappear against grey render. Think about your furniture and planting too. Greens and bright cushions pop against a dark grey deck, while a brown deck gives a softer, more natural backdrop. Smaller gardens often feel more open with a lighter board, while a dark deck can look smart and expensive in a courtyard setting.
A word on weathering
Composite settles in its first few weeks outdoors. There is usually a slight lightening as the surface mellows, then it holds steady, which is normal and nothing to worry about. The capped Elite boards hold their colour the longest of anything we sell, so if keeping that showroom look matters to you, they are worth the extra. Our guide to how long composite decking lasts goes into the detail.
See them in your own light before you buy
Screens lie, and so does the lighting in a showroom. The single best thing you can do is order a free sample pack, lay the pieces out in your own garden, and look at them in the morning, in the evening and after a shower of rain. Composite decking colours shift a lot with the light, and once you see them in place the decision usually makes itself. You can order the pack and browse the full range on our composite decking boards page, or give us a call if you want a steer.
