Grey or brown?

This is the real decision, and it usually sorts itself out once you look at your house. Grey tones like Anthracite, Stone and Graphite give a clean, modern look and sit well against rendered walls, grey window frames and contemporary planting. They are the most popular choice by a distance at the moment. The browns, Chocolate and Walnut, are warmer and more traditional, and they work beautifully with brick, stone and a greener, more established garden. Champagne Light Oak sits between the two, a light natural tone that brightens a space without going grey.

Think about sun and heat

Like any decking, darker boards get warmer in direct sun, so if your deck faces full south and you like bare feet, a lighter shade such as Stone or Champagne Light Oak will stay more comfortable through the afternoon. A darker board like Charcoal or Anthracite looks fantastic and hides the odd mark well, but it will feel warmer underfoot on a hot day. Neither is a problem, it is just worth knowing before you pick.

Match it to the house and the garden

Hold your samples up against the house wall, the back door and any existing paving or fencing, not just against each other. A colour that looks great in isolation can clash with warm red brick or disappear against grey render. Think about your furniture and planting too. Greens and bright cushions pop against a dark grey deck, while a brown deck gives a softer, more natural backdrop. Smaller gardens often feel more open with a lighter board, while a dark deck can look smart and expensive in a courtyard setting.

A word on weathering

Composite settles in its first few weeks outdoors. There is usually a slight lightening as the surface mellows, then it holds steady, which is normal and nothing to worry about.
