Composite decking in a Birmingham garden

Why composite decking suits Birmingham gardens

Birmingham isn’t the wettest UK city but it has its own set of challenges for timber decking. The Met Office records around 700mm of rainfall a year for Birmingham, spread across the year rather than in dry and wet seasons, so decks rarely get a chance to fully dry out. The heavy clay soil across much of the West Midlands holds moisture too, which means timber decking often rots from underneath long before it looks tired on top. Composite is a completely different material. Our boards are made from recycled wood fibre bound with HDPE plastic, so water doesn’t soak in the way it does with timber. No rot, no splinters, no annual staining. Birmingham’s housing stock is genuinely varied: interwar bay-window semis across Kings Heath, Moseley and Bournville, Victorian terraces in Harborne and around the Jewellery Quarter, post-war semis in Hall Green and Erdington, and significant new-build development along the canals and in the city centre. Composite works across all of them. For canal-side apartments and Jewellery Quarter conversions where balcony space matters, composite is often a better fit than timber because weight and maintenance are both lower. Boards are fully reversible, moulded woodgrain (Woodsman+) on one side, contemporary wide-groove (Active+) on the other.

Composite decking delivery to Birmingham

For Birmingham and the wider B postcode area, delivery is FREE on all deck kits and generally lands within 2-3 working days of ordering. The M5 route from Paignton is one of our most direct runs, so delivery windows are reliable and our partners know the West Midlands well. We use a kerbside service, which means the boards come off the lorry onto your driveway or the pavement outside. If you’re in the city centre, the Jewellery Quarter, or one of the canal-side developments where lorry access is tight, flag it when you order and we’ll work out the best approach. We’d rather ask upfront than have the driver stuck trying to turn round on a narrow Digbeth side street or down a restricted canal road. For apartment buildings, let us know at the ordering stage. Some central developments have loading-bay restrictions or need delivery outside peak hours, and we can usually work around it if we know in advance.

Common questions from Birmingham customers

Yes, but the sub-frame matters more than the boards themselves. Clay soil shifts with moisture: it swells when wet and shrinks when dry, which can cause timber sub-frames to move over time. For Birmingham gardens we’d recommend using our composite joists in the sub-frame, which don’t react to moisture, and making sure the posts are set into proper concrete footings below the frost line. Get the base right and the deck will sit level for the long haul.

Yes, and it’s a popular choice in Birmingham’s canal-side and Jewellery Quarter developments. Composite is lighter than stone or tile, doesn’t need chemical treatment, and handles rain, frost and UV well. Before you install on a balcony, check your building’s regulations (some developments have restrictions on floor coverings or weight), and make sure you’re using a proper sub-frame or pedestal system designed for balcony use.

Every kit includes boards, all fixings, starter clips and a driver bit for your drill. If you need additional items (step nosings for a raised deck, fascia skirting for a clean edge, L-profile corner trims) we stock those too and they ship on the same delivery at no extra cost.

For student HMOs across Selly Oak, Aston and Harborne, composite decking makes real sense. Student tenants rarely maintain timber decking, which means landlords end up re-treating or replacing it every few years. Composite doesn’t need treating, doesn’t splinter, and doesn’t look tired after one wet winter. The upfront cost is higher but the ongoing maintenance is essentially zero, which matters when you’re managing multiple properties.
